Sustainability

Play on. Today and tomorrow.

At GreenFields, we believe that the future of sport depends on how we design the surfaces we play on. While we deliver a full range of turf systems, our focus in new developments is on reducing environmental impact — from smarter material use to better recyclability and more energy-efficient production.

Artificial turf creates opportunities to play where natural grass can’t survive due to climate, water scarcity, or lack of space. But with that opportunity comes responsibility. That’s why GreenFields works closely with TenCate Grass and the Centre for Turf Innovation to bring the next generation of more sustainable, high-performance turf systems to life.

      Innovative mindset

Through the innovation power of TenCate, GreenFields offers next-gen turf systems like Pure PT (non-infill, low-maintenance) and ONE-DNA™ (made from a single polymer, designed for recycling). These systems are developed and validated through intensive R&D at the Centre for Turf Innovation, where material science meets athlete feedback and real-world conditions.

And when pitches reach the end of their lifespan, we support responsible solutions. As a partner in GBN Artificial Grass Recycling, GreenFields contributes to a scalable and transparent circular recycling model — turning old turf into new raw materials and reducing waste at scale.

      Our sustainability focus areas

      • Innovation with purpose – New systems developed with circularity in mind
      • Water-saving designs – Irrigation-free turf systems like Pure EP
      • su
      • Smarter production – Focus on energy reduction and local sourcing
      • Longer lifecycle – Systems tested for resilience, to reduce replacement frequency
      • Circular collaboration – Working with GBN-AGR and industry partners to close the loop

Not just for today’s pitch — but for tomorrow’s planet.

By choosing GreenFields, you gain access to both proven turf solutions and a clear path toward more sustainable performance.

Taking synthetic turf further towards circularity

Across Europe and other markets, there is a growing need for solutions to process synthetic turf at the end of its useful life. Municipalities, sports clubs and other organisations are therefore looking for ways to collect and process end-of-life synthetic turf and recover materials for further use. In April 2019, several companies in the synthetic turf value chain established GBN Artificial Grass Recycling (GBN-AGR). The participating organisations included GBN, Antea Sport, EdelGrass, TenCate Group, GreenFields, CSC Sport, Domo Sports Grass and Sports and Leisure Group. Through this collaboration, end-of-life synthetic turf can be collected and processed through a dedicated recycling facility. The recycling process separates materials from used synthetic turf systems so that recovered materials can be used as raw materials for new applications, where technically suitable.

In 2020, GBN opened its first dedicated synthetic turf recycling facility in the Netherlands, located in the Port of Amsterdam. The facility processes end-of-life synthetic turf with the aim of recovering materials and reducing the amount of material requiring disposal.

      ONE-DNA™: Circularity made simple

ONE-DNA™  artificial grass is made from a single polymer: polyethylene, from fibre to backing. This allows the material to enter standard PE recycling streams at end of life. In practice, it depends on who takes responsibility, how the material is collected and what infrastructure is available.

Developed within the Centre for Turf Innovation, ONE-DNA™ is a clear step toward circular design, simplifying the recycling process while delivering long-lasting, high-performance play.

One innovation. One material. Endless possibilities.

Conventional artificial turf typically combines polyethylene fibres with other polymers such as polypropylene, polyurethane or latex backings. These materials do not separate cleanly after years of outdoor use. ONE-DNA™ uses one polymer: polyethylene, from fibre to backing. This removes the material mix that complicates recycling.

      High performance. Zero infill.

Pure PT is an infill-free turf system engineered for elite-level play. Developed using advanced fibre technology and validated by players in real-world conditions, it offers excellent ball control, comfort, and durability — without the need for sand or rubber infill. With reduced maintenance and a lower environmental impact, Pure PT is a future-ready alternative for clubs and communities.

      Pure EP (water-free hockey pitch)

GreenFields Pure EP is a brand new dry turf (non-irrigated) field hockey pitch. A revolutionary hockey pitch offering a high paced elite hockey experience. The advanced, smooth EP surface, made from novel yarn combinations, ensures long lasting performance and consistent excellence.

GreenFields Pure EP is designed to be water and infill free whilst still offering stability and grip for every player, and excellent ball roll speed. The intelligent design features including Helix yarn technology ensures improved durability compared to conventional yarn design. GreenFields Pure EP is approved for use at FIH National level with no requirement for infill or water. This removes the need for irrigation, lowering water use and operating costs compared with water-based (wet) hockey pitches. It is an ideal product for clubs that want ultimate performance with irrigation as just an option.
