What is a MUGA Pitch?

A MUGA (Multi Use Games Area) is a versatile surface which enables a variety of sports to be played on it. Popular with educational establishments, a MUGA has cost and space saving benefits by having just one pitch for multi-sports instead of one for each sport. MUGAs are exactly what the acronym spells out, perfect for multi sports, so if you only have one sport in mind for your new pitch then it would be a better idea to choose a more specific surface type suitable for that sport.

MUGA TYPES

There are different types of MUGAs depending on the sport you wish to play on them. Sport England have classified multi use games areas into the numerical types below:

TYPE 1

These are open textured porous macadam areas used for ball rebound sports designed with tennis as the priority sport. Mini-tennis, netball and basketball are also possible along with wheelchair sports on this type of MUGA playground.

TYPE 2

These are open textured porous macadam areas used for ball rebound sports with netball as the priority. Tennis, mini-tennis and basketball are also possible along with wheelchair sports on this type of MUGA court.

TYPE 3

Polymeric surfaces over macadam base areas which are widely used for both education and leisure facilities and can be installed in a variety of colours. Netball is the priority sport with tennis, mini-tennis, basketball and wheelchair sports also possible.

TYPE 4

Polymeric surfaces over macadam base areas which are widely used for both education and leisure facilities and can be installed in a variety of colours. These surfaces are designed for recreational football and basketball but are not recommended for tennis or netball due to the greater shock absorbency and lower surface friction.

TYPE 5

3G surfaces with a short pile height and sand dressed surfaces can also be utilised as a MUGA football pitch and a MUGA hockey pitch and a sand dressed surface also enables Tennis to be played on it.
