Rugby Pitch Size

If you are opting for a new 3G rugby pitch it is important to consider the size that your new pitch will be. You need to consider if the pitch will be used for rugby alone or if you’d like football to be incorporated as a secondary sport. World Rugby have set official guidelines as to the dimensions of rugby pitches and it is important that these are considered during the pitch planning process.

The advice from World Rugby includes the following:

- The field of play must have a max length of 100m and a min length of 94m from try line to try line.

- Each in-goal can have a max length of 22m and a min length of 6m and the width of the pitch can be 70m max and 68m minimum.

These measurements can be further described as follows:

- 70m is from the inside of the touch in goal line to the inside of the touch in goal line

- 100m excludes the goal line

- The 22m in-goal includes the goal line but excludes the dead ball line

The length and breadth of the playing area are to be as near as possible to the dimensions indicated in the image below in order to comply with World Rugby Laws of the Game Law 1 – The Ground. All pitches should be rectangular in shape.

It is also important to consider the pitch lining, there should be solid lines on the dead-ball lines and touch-in-goal lines, the goal lines, the 22-metre lines, the half-way line and the touchlines. There also needs to be dash lines, each dash within a dash line is 5m in length. There are dash lines 5m from, and parallel to each touchline, 15m from, and parallel to, each touchline, 10m from, and parallel to, each side of the half-way line and 5m from, and parallel to, each goal line. There is also one line 0.5 metres long that intersects the centre of the half-way line.

Further advice on rugby pitch dimensions is available on the World Rugby website.
